POSITION SUMMARY

BorgWarner is currently looking for a “dynamic, results-driven” individual to join as an Environmental, Safety & Sustainability Intern at Hazel Park, Michigan.  The Environmental, Safety & Sustainability Intern will work with the Global Environmental and Sustainability team, primarily supporting and completing projects related to the EHS auditing program administration, Sustainability or Environmental, Social and Governance (“ESG”) program, environmental management system integration, environmental compliance, and environmental risk management strategies. 

Performance will be measured on successful completion of projects that help accomplish Departmental objectives. This role will involve significant interaction with a wide variety of functions within BorgWarner and offers the opportunity to gain in-depth experience in EHS compliance, environmental risk management, and ESG programs within a global enterprise. 

     

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

Global EHS Auditing Program

  • Assist in managing and coordinating EHS auditing program schedules, meetings, training and corrective action reviews.
  • Review, distribute and coordinate the Global sharing of Good EHS business practices.
  • Maintain and organize Corrective Action database related to EHS auditing program.
  • Assist in reviewing and developing practices, procedures and training related to program.
  • Assist in training 3rd party auditors and internal BW auditors to EHS auditing program procedures.
  • Assist in developing and presenting data analytics regarding the audit program. 
  • Participate in Plant EHS audits as a guest auditor.

Environmental Management Systems

  • Coordinate and manage database of all Global ISO 14001 plant certificates. 
  • Assist plants in scheduling Surveillance audits and Certifications audits.
  • Assist in developing and presenting Guidance Documents and Standards regarding EMS.
  • Participate in ISO 14001 training and Surveillance audits as appropriate.  

Enterprise Environmental

  • Manage the structure and content of the ICE Global Environmental Site, to facilitate improved user experience with locating information, sharing ideas and collaborating Globally.
  • Collect and analyze data.   Periodically publish reports on trends. 
  • Develop environmental technical topic summaries / guidance documents.  Store and share on the ICE (intranet) Global Environmental Site in an easy to locate manner. 
  • Set-up global webinars for improving knowledge sharing, on topics such as Energy reduction, EMS good practices, EHS auditing updates, Regional specific training opportunities, etc.…
  • Support Business Unit (BU) Environmental Committee leaders in sharing ideas and processes across BU’s.

Enterprise Sustainability

  • Support ESG strategy, goal progress and data collection.
  • Support the implementation of the supply chain sustainability assessment program and goal-tracking.
  • Provide review of and support to the annual Sustainability Report, including cross-functional data collection and review for accuracy.
  • Support enterprise ESG assessments and disclosures requested by customers, investors and other stakeholders.
  • Record assessment scores achieved and maintain assessment dashboard.
  • Support locations globally on completing Sustainability Self-assessment Questionnaires to ensure best-possible score and timely submission based on customer requests.
  • Maintain Self-Assessment Questionnaire dashboard to ensure access requests and questionnaires are addressed in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Maintain Sustainability SharePoint site and provide solutions for continuous improvement.
  • Benchmark ESG programs and goals both within and outside of automotive sector.
  • Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Pursing B.S. degree in Environmental Engineering, Biology, Environmental Health and Safety Management, Occupational Safety or similar
  • Sophomore/Junior degree status
  • Proficient in MS Office
  • Strong technical and analytical skills
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills

This position will adhere to the Global Star Safety Program, including safety rules, practices and training as outlined in the BorgWarner Safety Policy Manual.  This individual will work in a manner that stresses the importance of preventing accidents and illnesses.  He/she must take every precaution reasonable in the given circumstance for the protection of themselves and co-workers.  In addition, he/she is responsible for reporting all injuries and/or possible dangerous situations, incidents, or occurrences to their immediate supervisor.
